There’s something magical about traveling at night. As our train rumbled away from Jodhpur, carrying us deeper into Rajasthan’s Thar Desert, we felt the anticipation build. The cool night air whispered of adventures to come, and by dawn, we arrived at our destination—Jaisalmer, the Golden City.
Stepping off the train, we were immediately struck by the golden hue of the sandstone buildings, glowing warmly in the early morning light. Jaisalmer is unlike any other city, not just because of its breathtaking architecture but also because it is home to the only living fort in India. Within its ancient walls, life unfolds just as it has for centuries—shops, homes, and temples all nestled together in a maze of narrow, winding streets.
Our stay in a rooftop guesthouse within the fort was nothing short of magical. From this high vantage point, we watched the sun cast long golden shadows over the desert during sunset, and in the early hours of the morning, we witnessed the sky transform into soft hues of pink and orange. There’s something about Jaisalmer that inspires creativity—the desert breeze, the whispering walls of the fort, the way the city glows in the fading light. Ideas seem to take shape effortlessly here, whether in art, storytelling, or simply the joy of wandering.
By day, we explored Jaisalmer’s wonders—the intricately carved havelis, the peaceful Gadisar Lake, and the vibrant local markets filled with textiles, jewelry, and spices. The camel safari into the dunes left us breathless, riding through the endless waves of golden sand as the sun dipped below the horizon. Sitting by a crackling fire under a star-studded sky, we felt the desert’s deep, timeless rhythm.
Jaisalmer isn’t just a place; it’s an experience. It’s the feeling of being wrapped in golden light, of history whispering in your ear, and of inspiration blooming from the very air. Leaving was difficult, but we knew this city had left its mark on us forever.
If you ever find yourself drawn to Rajasthan, don’t miss Jaisalmer. Let the golden city steal your heart, just as it did ours.
